Fighting Celiac ?

September 13th is observed as Celiac Disease Awareness Day. With our lifestyle changes Celiac disease is on a spur among Indian population. Celiac disease is more common among Indians, specially, in Northern Indian than previously believed.

Celiac disease is an auto-immune condition where your body becomes sensitive to gluten which is richly found in food sources like wheat. If you have been recently diagnosed with celiac disease your very first concern will be "what to eat?", especially with Indian gluten rich diet.

Gluten free food is not an easy option as it is advised. Indian diet is carbohydrate rich diet with gluten as its major ingredient included in wheat flour items, variety of day-to-day food. It is the gluten in the wheat flour which helps the rotis puff up and helps the cake and bread to rise up.

Eating gluten free is definitely a learning process. No matter how much careful you have been there are always chances of consuming gluten rich diet and thus its affects in the form of both physical and emotional pain. Gluten exposure may cause bloating, constipation or diarrhoea, depression or anxiety, joint pains, brain fog, headaches or migraines, inflammation and irritability.

While nothing can resolve your symptoms with a blink of an eye, you can take a few simple steps towards the healing process.

Hydrate and hydrate yourself. Water is the best solution to flush out the gluten from the system. Soups, hot tea, juices all nourishes the body. Coconut water replaces the electrolyte loss while hydrating you.

Eat comfort foods starting from clear soups, ginger ale and slowly progressing to gluten free bread or crackers. Sleep off the gluten exposure and give your body a chance to heal itself.

Go high on probiotics once your symptoms have settled down. Probiotics will introduce new digestive enzymes which the gluten has washed away and these enzymes will then speed up the digestion process.

Once you have recovered completely add light exercises to your daily routine.

Currently the only treatment to celiac disease is life-long adherence to gluten free diet. If you have celiac disease or if you wish to resort to a healthy fad free lifestyle consult your nutritionist. Though a lot of gluten free options are available in market but yet an expert advice always comes handy so don’t forget to avail one.

Including a healthy gluten free diet can also mean depriving yourself of the vital mineral and supplement requirement. Consult your dietician to make the best of your celiac disease.
